RESUMO

Tall wheatgrass (Thinopyrum ponticum (Podp.) Barkworth and D.R. Dewey) is an important, highly salt-tolerant C3 forage grass. The objective of this work was to learn about the ecophysiological responses of accessions from different environmental origins under drought and salinity conditions, to provide information for selecting superior germplasm under combined stress in tall wheatgrass. Four accessions (P3, P4, P5, P9) were irrigated using combinations of three salinity levels (0, 0.1, 0.3 M NaCl) and three drought levels (100%, 50%, 30% water capacity) over 90 days in a greenhouse. The control treatment showed the highest total biomass, but water-use efficiency (WUE), δ13C, proline, N concentration, leaf length, and tiller density were higher under moderate drought or/and salinity stress than under control conditions. In tall wheatgrass, K+ functions as an osmoregulator under drought, attenuated by salinity, and Na+ and Cl- function as osmoregulators under salinity and drought, while proline is an osmoprotector under both stresses. P3 and P9, from environments with mild/moderate stress, prioritized reproductive development, with high evapotranspiration and the lowest WUE and δ13C values. P4 and P5, from more stressful environments, prioritized vegetative development through tillering, showing the lowest evapotranspiration, the highest δ13C values, and different mechanisms for limiting transpiration. The δ13C value, leaf biomass, tiller density, and leaf length had high broad-sense heritability (H2), while the Na+/K+ ratio had medium H2. In conclusion, the combined use of the δ13C value, Na+/K+ ratio, and canopy structural variables can help identify accessions that are well-adapted to drought and salinity, also considering the desirable plant characteristics. Tall wheatgrass stress tolerance could be used to expand forage production under a changing climate.

RESUMO

The tiller density is a key agronomic trait of winter wheat that is essential to field management and yield estimation. The traditional method of obtaining the wheat tiller density is based on manual counting, which is inefficient and error prone. In this study, we established machine learning models to estimate the wheat tiller density in the field using hyperspectral and multispectral remote sensing data. The results showed that the vegetation indices related to vegetation cover and leaf area index are more suitable for tiller density estimation. The optimal mean relative error for hyperspectral data was 5.46%, indicating that the results were more accurate than those for multispectral data, which had a mean relative error of 7.71%. The gradient boosted regression tree (GBRT) and random forest (RF) methods gave the best estimation accuracy when the number of samples was less than around 140 and greater than around 140, respectively. The results of this study support the extension of the tested methods to the large-scale monitoring of tiller density based on remote sensing data.

RESUMO

This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of nitrogen fertilization on tillering dynamics of Alexandergrass (Urochloa plantaginea (Link) Hitch) grazed by beef heifers in a rotational stocking grazing method. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design following a repeated measure arrangement, three levels of nitrogen (Zero, 150 and 300kg ha-1) and two area repetition. The classification of tillers into categories (basal and axillary) showed a greater number of basal tillers, due to their higher appearance rate, in the absence of nitrogen fertilization. Nitrogen fertilization promoted higher axillary tiller density. The use of nitrogen promotes the renewal of axillary tillers of Alexandergrass, without compromising the stability of the tiller population.(AU)

ABSTRACT: The silvopastoral system has been suggested as an alternative to recover degraded pastures in tropical regions. However, trees reduce the light available for pastures, which may affect the growth and herbage accumulation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphogenesis, canopy structure and herbage accumulation of signalgrass ( Brachiaria decumbens ) subjected to three light regimes (0, 20 and 70% of natural shading) and two fertilization levels (presence or absence of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium). Leaf and stem elongation rates increased under shading but did not vary with fertilization. The leaf appearance rate was greater under fertilizer treatment but was generally similar among light regimes. The tiller density was greater in full sun and lower in intense shading. Tiller density responded to fertilization under full sun and moderate shading. Herbage accumulation increased by 42% with fertilization under full sun, 12% under moderate shading and did not vary under intense shading. Results showed that even under fertilization the herbage accumulation was limited by reduced light. However, under moderate shade the fertilization was important to raise tiller population over the growth cycles.

The experiment was carried out in a field previously seeded in November of 1997, with Tanzania grass, at Lavras-MG, Brazil from August of 2001, to May of 2002, with the objective to evaluate the influence of four cutting intervals (4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks) and three K2O doses (0, 100 and 200 kg/ha) on growth and forage production of Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Tanzania 1. Soil analysis of the experimental area was made and a maintenance fertilization was done, by applying 150 kg/ha of N, as ammonium sulfate, 60 kg/ha of P2O5, as simple superphosphate, and 50 kg/ha of K2O, as potassium chloride. The treatments were combined in a factorial 4x3 design, in randomized blocks with four replications. Potassium fertilization was done in broadcast method between lines of tanzania grass, in two applications. Linear increments of tiller height and dry matter production of tanzania grass were observed by increasing the cutting intervals. The tiller density and the leaf/stem ratio were independent of the applied treatments.
